We teach her to look at our face.
We start by giving her a treat. We hold the treat near our face and say her name. She looks at the treat and therefore at our face. We do this from as close to her as she is comfortable, trying to get closer as we go. She has a tendency to back away at first. After we are quite close, we hold the treat in our mouth instead of in the hand. She is now looking directly and only at out face. we drop the treat out of our mouth and praise her. After this, we sometimes hold the treat so that it is inside our mouth and she can't see it and say her name. She is now searching our face. We drop the treat and praise her. We finally acquire a clicker and start using it. We now just say her name and when she looks up at our face, click and treat. She learned this behaviour quickly but continues to get better at it as the weeks go by. We click and treat for walking beside us and looking up at out faces. By the time she is 15 weeks old, she is able to do look at us even under the fairly extreme distraction of playing with other dogs. |
