Give me your Paw
Thursday, 13 September 2007
I'm not sure exactly how this went since S_  trained her on this by herself.

This is the description I got:

I touch her paw and when she picks it up, I click and treat.
Then, when she picks it up on her own I click and treat.
Then, when she picks it up and touches my hand I say paw, click and treat.
When she is doing that reliably, I  say paw, she picks up her paw and touches my  hand. I click and treat.

Update: Right and Left

We have taught Lilia to give the left or right paw on command. This was equally simple.

I say, "Right paw" and offer her my hand where it is most convienient for her to give me the right paw. She recognizes "paw" and give me the right one because that's easiest. She gets a treat. Repeat several times.

Next session I do the same with the left paw.

I continue alternating sides untill she knows which paw is which. I then start to offer her my hand where it is equally easy for her to give me either paw. She only gets a treat if she gives me the one I asked for.
